Welcome to Mumbai

Before embarking on this virtual journey through Mumbai, India., one must first indulge in the cities history. Mumbai was named after the local goddess Mumbadevi. The history of this beautiful city dates back to the formation of the seven islands: Colaba, Mazagaon, Mahim, Parel, Bombay Island, Worli and Old Woman's Island. Its population consists of over 20 million people. The city has the largest and the busiest port, handling India's foreign trade and also a major International airport (Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport). Mumbai is the business capital of India and is also one on the largest cities in the country. The third largest Stock Exchange in the world is situated in Mumbai. Here, trading of stocks is carried out in billions of rupees (Indian currency) everyday.

Throughout this journey you will learn about Mumbai's beautiful features, evil paradises, skyscrapers, and its infamous slums. Furthermore, I will discuss Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum which was founded in 1882, during the British colonial era. The slum grew in part because of an expulsion of factories and residents from peninsular city center by colonial government, and from rural poor migrating into urban Mumbai. Lastly, you will learn about my personal journey, which was an eye opening experience. The Journey Begins NOW !
